Wedding Wednesday | Hiring a Hair & Make-Up Artist

3/16/16

WW_MakeUpArtistLately a ton of my Emma Loo Brides have been filling my inbox with suggestions for a hair and make-up artist so I’ve decided to answer some of my darling Brides questions (and some of my future ‘Emma Loo Brides’!) in today’s Wedding Wednesday post.  As it turns out, a sweet friend of mine is actually a hair and make-up artist herself, and since she knows WAAAAYYYY more about hair and make-up than I do, I decided to interview her!

My friend Jennifer, of Jennifer Abercrombie Beauty is incredible y’all! She is a sweet soul and has a heart of gold! I trusted her enough to beautify me and my bridesmaids (& Mama!) on my very own wedding day.  Seeing her business transform literally overnight has been so inspiring! I’ve decided to ask her some questions regarding the importance of hiring a hair and make-up artist for both your wedding day AND engagement session! So here goes!

Describe your ideal set-up/location for apply a Bride’s makeup on her wedding day.
A clutter free, open area with large windows and lots of natural light would be my dream set up for any wedding day (a table and bar stool/high chair would be the icing on the cake, but lets not get too picky =) )! Natural lighting is SO important for makeup to ensure that all the colors are a perfect match and nothing is too overdone. We’ve all had those moments where we look great in the bathroom mirror and then we get in the car and flip down the visor and gasp because everything looks so different than what we just saw in the bathroom mirror….natural lighting can guarantee that you won’t have to worry one bit about anything ;)!!
In your opinion, what are the biggest trends in hair and makeup for the 2016 wedding season?
Soft, more natural and “un-done” looks are my top favorites! More and more brides are opting for their hair half-up or all down and I personally LOVE it! Don’t get me wrong, up-dos are gorgeous, but sometimes they can make you look SO different, and no groom wants to see someone they don’t recognize walking down the isle =) For makeup, lashes lashes lashes! I have been loving “stacking lashes” = applying 2 pairs to each eye! They really amp up the look and make the eyes pop!
If a Bride is not able to hire you for her engagement session, what advice would you give to her when applying her own makeup?
Search Pinterest, check out my favorite makeup blog – Maskcara.com & watch YouTube – there are SO many great tips & tricks out there – do a little research and preparation and it will go a long way!How far in advance do you/will you take bookings? How do you do your payment (Deposits? Travel fees? etc..)
I am booking all the way until the end of 2017! I do require a $100 non-refundable deposit & signed contract to secure your Wedding Date. I do charge a travel fee based on mileage to your getting ready location. I accept payment via the Cash App, check or cash.

How long should your makeup applications last? And how does a Bride avoid sweating off all of her makeup during her summer wedding?
I use primers, long-wearing makeup + a setting spray to ensure that your makeup should last you throughout the night and often into the next day (my clients have sent me selfies with their makeup still intact the following day 😉 ) The biggest tip I can give is avoid touching your face or having it rub up against anyone or anything!! I know you hug a lot of people on your wedding day but try your best to not press your face up against a shoulder or a face or anything! The less you touch your face the longer the makeup will last! And if you must touch it at all, always dab!!! NO rubbing!

How should makeup be done in order to photograph well?
I use a foundation specifically formulated for photography and I believe that makes a HUGE difference! Another tip is to go a little extra on everything…pictures tend to wash you out…but I do have brides who want to look natural in person so they opt out of the extra blush/extra lip etc and that is totally ok too! False lashes are a must!! I promise they will photograph beautifully and make your eyes pop! I suggest staying away from super harsh colors or super dark eyes/thick dark black liner on top and bottom! And if you are going to go with a bold eye, maybe go a little bit softer on the cheeks/lips to even everything out!BP_OmegaPreparation_4 BP_OmegaPreparation_2

Some other hair and make-up artists that I’ve worked with at past weddings (& have loved!) and have had happy Brides work with have been the following:

Hope this has helped all you Emma Loo Bride-to-Be’s! Happy Wednesday loves! XO! -Emma Loo
